How to make strategy games feel good on a touchscreen

April 17, 2026 · Marta Kowalczyk

Strategy games and touchscreens have a rocky history. The genre grew up on a mouse and keyboard, and a lot of mobile strategy still feels like it's fighting the hardware. After playing a pile of them for the site, I've got some patterns.

The best ones, like Tidelock Command, give you a pause button and build the whole game around it. When you can stop time and plan, fat-finger mistakes stop mattering so much. The worst ones demand split-second precision from a control scheme that can't deliver it.

Readable UI matters even more on a phone. Big tap targets, clear icons, and a camera that doesn't need constant fiddling. If I have to pinch-zoom every few seconds to see what's happening, I'm out.

My advice as a player: try a game's tutorial map before committing. You'll know within minutes whether the controls click with you. If they fight you early, they usually fight you forever.
